HISTORY

The history of the Laboratory of Column Preparation and Chromatography (LPCC) is intimately linked to the creation of LADETEC and associated laboratories.Initially, LPCC acronym refered to the sector of glass capillary column preparation, which more recently has been integrated into the sector of gas chromatography analysis(former HRGC). In 1985 prof. Kurt Grob, of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), came to Brazil, invited to minister a course of capillary column preparation for gas chromatography, as part of a strategy of divulgation and training for human resources in this area. The presence of Prof. Grob and his wife Mrs. G. Grob at the Institute of Chemistry, transmitting his pioneer experience of almost 30 years in gas chromatography, specially high-resolution capillary column preparation, was of fundamental importance for the consolidation of this HRGC excellence center in our country.["Tips from a specialist - Interviw with K. Grob". Revista de Química Industrial, November 1985;pp.282-288; " A little bit of History... From smoke tobacco plant to chromatography". Revista de Quimica Industrial, July 1986, pp.193-195].

For more than 15 years, the laboratory represented the diffusion center of new concepts in column preparation, introduction mechanisms, sample focalization and expansion of the universe of substances capable of being analyzed by HRGC [Revisions]. The specifically investigated new borders were high temperature gas chromatography (HTGC) [articles] and chiral gas chromatography (CGC) [Anal. Chem.]. As the technique has been consolidated in the country, the laboratory currently dedicates itself to R, D&I (Research, Development and Innovation) in analyses of complex mixtures, pharmaceutical drugs and industrial products, with application in environmental, forensic, geochemical and other analyses. It is the integrating part of the technical-scientific support to the other laboratories associated with LADETEC-IQ/UFRJ, regarding gas chromatography.
